Their website lists pictures of appropriate wear and when it is time to dispose of the bone. Another important safety factor is choosing the appropriate size for your dog. When in doubt, they usually recommend sizing up to avoid choking hazards. Keep in mind if you have multiple sizes of dogs in your household that a smaller chew can become a choking hazard for your larger dog. It is also important to keep the bones clean, although they do not recommend putting these in a dishwasher. You can hand wash the bones with warm water and a nontoxic dish soap if needed.
