Preparing for the Trip
Plan ahead for your trip. Research dog-friendly destinations and lodging to ensure your pet will be welcome. Once you’ve selected your location, make sure your pup is up to date on all necessary vaccines. If your dog is on medications, have a plan to ensure you will have enough for the duration of your trip plus a little extra in case you get stuck somewhere. You’ll want to have a list of essentials for your dog so they feel at home while traveling. This should include food and water bowls, their regular food, gear such as leashes and harnesses, a bed or blanket, a favorite toy, and any necessary medications.
Road Trips with Your Dog
Planning a cross country trip with your pup? Be prepared with the appropriate car safety gear including a seat belt or travel crate to ensure your pet will ride safely with you. Map out your drive, including frequent rest stops for your pup to have a potty break. Just like you need to stop and stretch, your pup will appreciate a quick 15 minute stretch break as well. Pack dog-friendly snacks your pup loves to keep them satisfied during the ride (be careful if your dog gets car sick!). Bring familiar beds or toys to make your dog cozy during the ride and for once you arrive at your destination.

While this can seem nerve-racking at first, flying with your pup can be a quick way to get to your destination without the hassle of a long car ride. It is important to research airline and TSA policies to ensure a smooth experience at the airport. Check with your veterinarian regarding any necessary vaccines and health clearances before booking your trip. Pack a comfort item for your dog to help them feel less anxious about the experience. Consider calming supplements if approved by your vet to help your pup get through the flight with less anxiety.
Dog-Friendly Accommodations & Activities
There are many options for pet-friendly destinations and activities! Keep in mind these are likely to cost you an extra fee per dog and there may be weight and breed requirements. Research your lodging site before booking to ensure your pet will be allowed to stay. The last thing you want is to make the trip to your hotel to find out your dog is too big for the requirements. Once you and your pup have settled in, you’ll want to have excursions planned to make the most out of the trip, although a quiet movie night with room service sure sounds nice too! Depending on your destination, you’ll likely be able to find some dog-friendly restaurants or breweries. Do a local search of the area you’re staying in to find some gems. Plan out some fun walks and explorations on local trails or beaches that allow dogs to give your pup a place to pick up new smells.
Travel Etiquette & Safety
In order to continue having dog-friendly travel destinations available, be sure to be respectful along the way. This includes cleaning up after your pup and following any leash laws. If staying in a hotel or neighborhood, keep your dog from excessive barking, especially overnight and early in the morning. Even if your lodging is pet-friendly, that doesn’t mean you don’t have to clean up after your dog. Wipe your dog’s paws before going inside and try to limit time on the furniture. If your dog’s water bowl or food spills all over the floor, clean it up as best you can. It shouldn’t be the cleaning crew’s job to clean up basic things like this. Clean up after your dog like you clean up after yourself to ensure dog-friendly places continue to stay that way and to avoid extra cleaning fees on your stay!
