Top 10 Things You Need For A Dog

1. Collars and Leashes

You’ll want a comfortable, study collar and leash for your new pup as one of your main puppy supplies. These will ensure your pup will be safe on walks and outings. While there are so many options available, a study, affordable brand is Wilderdog. They have a variety of products including leashes, collars, harnesses, and even backpacks. Their 5 foot quick-clip leash is an essential for our pack. They come in many colors, so you can customize this to your dog.

2. Dog Crate

Hardtop crate helpful for separation anxiety

Dogs need a safe, quiet space to be able to retreat to after an exhausting day. It is also important to have a space for your dog to be contained while you are away at work. My dogs do best with a more closed in crate, as it provides a cozier environment. This especially comes into play with dogs who might have separation anxiety. Although these can often be pricer than other crates, these provide higher security to ensure your dog is safe while you’re gone. Check out this Petmate Dog Kennel to give your dog a cozy, safe place to lay.

If you travel or want to bring your dog to the office, consider a soft-sided folding travel crate for easy portability.

3. Chew Toys

Most dogs like to chew and to avoid them chewing on your furniture, make sure you have chew toys available. One of my favorite brands is Benebone (check out our full review here!). They are very durable and provide a fun enrichment activity for your dog. Coming in a number of sizes and shapes, you will find a bone for every dog! Check out the 4 pack Benebone Box to let your dog explore different shapes of bones.

4. Dog Food

Give your dog a healthy, balanced meal

You can’t have a dog without buying dog food and treats! Finding the right brand for your dog can be particularly stressful, as you want only the best for you dog. Dog food comes in many varieties from different flavors to dry and wet food. Talk to your vet to get specific recommendations that are most appropriate for your dog.

If you’re looking for specific recommendations, our puppies have been on Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach Puppy Food since they were weaned off milk. This has seemed to agree with their digestive systems and they have regular bathroom habits since being on this food. While I like the Purina food, their mom eats Blue Buffalo brand dog food without issues as well. With any dog food, you’ll read pros and cons so be sure to speak with your vet when deciding on a food.

5. Pet Camera

Watch your dog while away using a camera

If you work a 9-5 job like us, you will want to invest in a good dog camera to be able to watch your dog while away. We have used an Ezviz 360 degree security camera for years (so long that we still have an older model that still works!) This uses Wi-Fi to allow you to watch your dog in real time and playback any times of movement. The 360 degree feature is nice because not only can you watch your dog, you can rotate around the room to get a look at other areas of the room. There is two way sound on these, so you can talk to your dog throughout the day (as long as this doesn’t make them anxious!).

6. Car Accessories

Protect your car with a dog car seat

If you’re getting a dog, you’re likely planning to take them on many adventures throughout the years! Puppy supplies for the car will ensure you have many good trips together. To protect your car, I recommend getting seat covers to protect the fabric from the wear and tear your dog is likely to have on them. We use a waterproof hammock dog car seat cover that not only protects the seats, but helps keep the dogs safe in the car. Be sure to get dog seat belts as well for an added layer of protection (***dog seat belts should be used attached to harnesses, not collars).

7. Grooming and Hygiene

Bathe your dog every 1-3 months with dog safe shampoo

No matter what dog breed you have, you’re going to need to spend some time on grooming and hygiene. You’ll need nail trimmers, a brush, shampoo, and dental products to name a few basic grooming puppy supplies. One of our favorite grooming products is Burt’s Bees Oatmeal Dog Shampoo. This shampoo will leave your dog’s coat looking shiny and healthy!

8. Dog Bowls

Get your pup a fancy set of dog bowls

Every dog needs their own set of bowls for eating and drinking. Avoid plastic dog bowls, as these can more easily harbor bacteria. I prefer metal or ceramic dog bowls. To add a fun flare to your dog’s bowls, consider Le Creuset Enamel on Steel dog bowls. If you have any other Le Creuset kitchen products, you can match your dog’s bowls to these. I have been using these bowls for a while and would recommend them, although you do have to be cautious to not chip off the enamel.

9. Dog Beds

Nothing is better than plopping down into bed after a long day! Your dog will feel the same way! This doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but make sure it is comfy for your dog. Consider an orthopedic, waterproof dog bed that will be comfortable for your dog and easy to clean with a removable, washable cover.

10. Natural Flea and Tick Repellent

Keep your pup safe in the outdoors with flea and tick repellent

Ah, the wonders of the outdoors! But along with the wonders, the outdoors can lead to fleas and ticks for your dog. While there are a number of over the counter and prescription options available for this, many dog owners prefer to take a more natural approach to flea and tick control. Wondercide Flea and Tick Spray uses safe, natural essential oils to repel fleas, ticks, and mosquitos. The best thing is that it is safe for use around the household.
